New Jersey Live Polka and Ethnic Bands

Polka Bands are back!

in this kind of music to show the rest of the them!   Let me put you on a We at New Jersey Live Musicians are a collection of musicians that specialize in ethnic music however we were all trained at colleges and universities to study the "long hair music."  I learned to orchestrate at Berklee but still play accordion because I love it!  I am finding that the electronics are great, but people want to hear REAL music.   A Norwegian friend of mine said "Why don't you play more accordion instead of that other stuff."   It sure sounds like my father.   I have taken her request to heart and have been doing exactly what the people want to hear: real music not synthesized.  It is a little more work playing a squeezebox as opposed to a keyboard.   I will trade any day not to set up all that equipment.

We have some CDs for sale.  I will soon have three, very soon I hope, but CDs that you have made, everyone wants to know.  I have made a new page for CDs that are for sale by our musicians.  We can use photos and music samples as well as schedules of dates.  People want to hear new bands all over.

You see, we the musicians of New Jersey are willing to show everyone how we play ethnic music, just like the rest of the world.
I always assumed we were good because we are so close to New York City!  I learned a lot playing in Staten Island. Hang around the right people and you too will learn FAST!   Right from the old country, top notch NJ musicians have the experience page and link you up today!

German, Polish, Scandinavian, it doesn't matter, we all learned out the same books.  Tell me: Palmer Hughes or Petro Diero Jr.?   How about Pietro Frosini, he had the best charts. I still use a lot of his works today: Olive Blossoms, Carnival of Venice, Voices of Spring, Bubbles, you remember them too.  I am proud to say I have been playing accordion over 40 years now and I play a lot of the music I did in high school.   One never forgets.  When you learn beautiful music, it stays with you the rest of your life.

Erik-Hans Vagen - accordionist & band leader.         Born of European parents, I have over 40 years of service in ethnic folk music and dance band.  Scandinavian background, I learned the dance music on the job with: Hans Larsen from Norway, Brooklyn and New Jersey before he passed on. Still playing at age 92!  He was the best of them all!  Walter Eriksson played with Hans when he was 15 years old also.

I also learned a lot from the Walter Eriksson records. I don't believe in copying, but I had the Eric Olsen's Scandinavian Books!  I wish I had taken lessons from Walter like some of you.  I can say Walter was one of the finest I have ever heard, and we all have loved and learned from him.

 Art Nilsen - accordionist

What can we say?  He was the best and loved by all!

I have met some fine musicians with fine chops.   There are a lot of good musicians out there!  Link up today. This is not an agency but a way for all of us to keep working. We are not cutting each other out of work (just the DJs) instead get work.
There are not that many of us that can play the styles requested in these ethnic bands.  Do you know the right tempo for a mazurka or czardas?  How about tangos (European and South American)? Some didn't know there were two different tango beats.
There are only a handful of people that do Scandinavian.  Walter Eriksson left us a good band: Scandinavian Accordion Club and we have all learned from him.

Love you Walter
